Happy Mother’s Day—to our mothers, to the sons and daughters of mothers, to all of us.
There’s something very special about mothering energy. That caring. That commitment. That unwavering love. At least that was my experience, with my mother, with my grandmothers, even with my grandmother-in-law who tenderly called me the “daughter she never had.” No matter my mood, they were always present, with open arms and open hearts.
I miss them all.
That’s the thing about life. It’s fleeting. So often you don’t realize that your most special moments are happening right now. Until they’re done, dusted, and in the rearview mirror.
I lost my mother on August 2, 2019. If you’ve read my book, Quantum Surfing: The Innovator’s Guide to Being Lucky, Aligned, and Unstoppable, you know her parting, along with a dear friend on the same day, broke me. LINK
My mother was a bright light. She was thrilled when summer holidays came—more time together, with lazy days at the beach collecting shells, hiding in the dunes, and playing impromptu games of leapfrog. Other afternoons picking blackberries, strawberries, even huckleberries, and then making pies and jams. Evenings filled with card games playing “Old Maid” only to discover that the maid was missing from the deck. Haha.
Days filled with nothing—and everything.
In my book I share several stories about my mom. Here’s one of them:
My mother passed in August 2019.
The following March, I went to sleep in our caretaker cottage in Fiji. The next morning, my birthday, I awoke, sat up in bed, and noticed something on my dresser across the room.
I walked over and picked it up.
It was a birthday card. From my mother.
Overnight, it had fallen from the bulletin board above the dresser. But here’s the thing: it was the only item disturbed on the board. Everything else remained pinned exactly where it had been.
I opened the card and read the verse inside:
Listen to your heart. If you can’t hear what it’s saying in this noisy world, make time for yourself. Try. Take chances. Make mistakes. Life can be messy and confusing at times, but it’s also full of surprises. The next rock in your path might be a stepping stone. And if you ever get lost, don’t worry. The people who love you will find you. Count on it. Make a beautiful life… the kind of life you deserve.
The card was lovingly signed by both my mom and my dad.
And on that birthday morning in 2020, months after my mother had passed, she delivered her card to me.
On this Mother’s Day, know that you are loved. Loved in a way that a mother’s heart loves. And remember, if you ever feel lost, don’t worry. The people who love you will find you, always. Make a beautiful life—the kind of life you deserve.
Do something for you today. Something that may feel like nothing. But really? Is everything. x
