It wasn’t always natural for me to travel alone.
At 22, just out of college, I was living life on rails. Great education, top consulting job in NYC. All the trappings of an upwardly mobile, high performance life. But rails nonetheless. Guard rails. Achievements, certainly. But predictable, as long as you put in the work.
And I knew I needed to experience life beyond the rails.
So I started traveling. First to Mexico. Then as my work took me around the world, to Paris. Then weekends in Amsterdam. Or Dublin. Conferences in Morocco. Business deals in South Africa. Soon, you’re more worldly, more experimental, more expansive.
Now it’s natural.
One step at a time, and you’ve cultivated a new way of being.
But I was reminded that what can feel natural may appear supernatural to someone else.
Three years ago I touched down in Jerez—the land of Andalusian horses and sherry. And during my time in southwest Spain, this conversation unfolded:
“You’re really brave.”
My taxi driver interrupted our chatty conversation to make this point. And when I blithely brushed aside his comment, he reiterated, “No. You’re really brave.” The words hung there.
Jose had picked me up three weeks earlier from the queue at Jerez airport in southern Spain. It was a late summer night, after jetsetting from San Francisco to Chicago to Frankfurt to Madrid (a detour resulting in an unexpected afternoon of city sights and espresso with cinnamon sugar churros) to Jerez. In the taxi we conversed in his limited English and my non-existent Spanish as we made our way to El Puerto de Santa Maria, my new home and destination that I had scribbled on a scrap of paper.
The gate was locked. So Jose waited with me while I contacted a friend of the owner who graciously joined us in the wee hours to sort my arrival. Now three weeks later I was heading back to Jerez airport with Jose. We caught up like old friends, somehow understanding each other easily. I shared that I was off to walk the Camino Santiago. “Alone?” he asked incredulously. “Alone, again?” That’s when he gave voice to my bravery. He was enamored with my independent spirit and my delight in adventure.
He got me thinking, what does it mean to be brave?
Is traveling alone brave? I suppose so, especially if you’ve not done it before. Every new experience is a growth edge. In my life, I’ve had several experiences that coaxed bravery—like launching a business in Fiji and surviving the eye of two category 5 super cyclones. And then I’ve had experiences that so many others endure as well—like the emotional roller coaster of grief that follows the loss of a loved one. That’s brave.
So, Jose’s comment had me considering, where am I not brave? Where am I not bold?
It didn’t take long to find that growth edge for me—sharing my spirituality and multi-dimensional inspirations more openly. I often get otherworldly insights, then I launch experiments and research the science to come to an understanding of why something is possible. By the time I share the science, I’m well beyond the initial insight. I don’t share early in the process. Yet it’s the spectrum that has shaped me as a human, leader, and entrepreneur. So in the spirit of being brave, I accept the invitation to share insights more broadly and in the moment. And I trust that more people will benefit and a deeper understanding will emerge.
My inner circle know that I experienced a profound, week long awakening 12 years ago. After that I could no longer pretend the world works the way we believe. In my subsequent quest, I learned to read the Akashic Records, and conversations with the guides have gifted me many insights. Paired with science, I’ve come to understand the quantum nature of our world, upending our outdated perceptions of reality.
We are immersed in infinite divinity. Life is a playground. An exquisite and wondrous playground. As I continue to experience her beauty and discover her frameworks, I’m excited to bravely share with you.
