Joy Isn’t Frivolous—It’s Signal

Mountains ahead, audiobook queued up, two of my kids and my son’s girlfriend meeting me in Vail.

I’m driving to a weekend of family and a Bucknell gathering. And somewhere on a winding mountain road, a woman named Sophia will start reading my book to me.

Her voice has a slight British accent. It reminds me of sitting on the deck at Tavola with my expat friends, sun setting, laughter echoing across the hills.

The book she’s reading traces my awakening and my quest to figure out how reality actually works—because our conventional narratives are clearly untrue. It follows my dives into quantum mechanics, neuroscience, and applied enlightenment to create an architecture of this wonderfully layered and magnificent world we inhabit. And it offers an energetic onramp so you can perceive and navigate this glorious reality—by being lucky, which is not random but driven by behaviors.

I’m listening to all of this while driving through mountains to be with people I love.

And I realize: this is exactly how I want to live.

In Quantum Surfing, we call this “Commit to the Joy of the Journey.” It’s one of the core tenets. And it’s not about ignoring challenges or pretending everything is sunshine. It’s about letting joy be your compass.

My mother understood this instinctively. She was pure joy—a flight attendant turned stay-at-home mom who turned ordinary summer days into adventures. Berry picking. Homemade jams. Spontaneous picnics. Our house was the gathering place for every kid in the neighborhood. She didn’t analyze her way through life. She felt her way. And somehow, she always landed exactly where she needed to be.

I used to think that was naive. Now I understand it was extraordinarily powerful.

Here’s how joy as navigation works:

When you’re choosing between two paths and one makes your heart lift—even slightly—that’s data. When something feels heavy and obligatory versus light and alive, that’s information. The quantum game responds to your frequency. Joy isn’t frivolous. It’s a signal.

One of my clients, Mary, had always succeeded by being hyper-organized, totally on point, the most prepared and reliable person in the room. Then she added lucky behaviors and flow to her already success-driven profile. Within 48 hours of our first session: a business investment tripled. A first-class upgrade appeared. She stumbled into a concert by her favorite band. She didn’t work harder. She followed what felt alive.

My friend Elan turned a canceled flight into first-class hide-and-seek with his three-year-old daughter on an empty plane. My son created a 30-day embarrassment challenge in Australia and transformed from socially reticent to someone who finds friends anywhere. My daughter Vivian recorded an entire EP in two weeks at Tavola because she followed the luminous feeling.

None of them had a detailed plan. They had a felt sense. And they trusted it.

This is what joy as navigation looks like.

The book edits are done. (Woohoooo! 🎉)

Next week, I’m sharing my book, Quantum Surfing: The Innovator’s Guide to Being Lucky, Aligned, and Unstoppable, with my launch team for early access. And no surprise—this launch team will include fun-filled gatherings of international entrepreneurs.

Fun being the operative word.
