Their finding? The most successful people aren’t the most talented. They’re moderately talented—meaning average. No big shakes. What truly sets them apart? They’re lucky. And not just run-of-the-mill fortunate, they’re magnificently lucky.
I’ve been teaching this in Quantum Surfing since 2022. But 2025 showed me something deeper about how luck actually works.
At a New Year’s dinner last January, I chose my word for 2025: “magnetic.” Not productive. Not strategic. Magnetic. I decided to actively shift my energy—to attract rather than chase.
By March, I was on Bucknell University’s Advisory Board for the Perricelli-Gegnas Center for Entrepreneurship + Innovation.
How? Pure serendipity.
Bucknell’s San Francisco outreach guy kept trying to connect with me. I finally replied—sorry, moved to Denver. Within 24 hours he’d connected me to their Colorado contact. Within a week I was at dinner with the center’s chair. In October I presented a Quantum Surfing Workshop at Bucknell, and now I’m planning next year’s summit—here in Denver.
That’s not talent grinding its way to success. That’s magnetic energy creating lucky outcomes.
But here’s what the Italian researchers didn’t explore: Can you become predictably lucky?
Richard Wiseman already answered that. Lucky people aren’t born—they’re made. They’re curious where others are focused. They trust their gut when others overthink. They see opportunities that were always there, invisible to everyone else grinding away.
This is why I created Quantum Surfing. As I write in my upcoming book: “Luck isn’t random. It’s a rhythm, a wave you can learn to ride.”
